Monday Events:
Meet & Greet:
Each day students will gather to get announcements and schedules for that day's events. On the first day Mr. Childers will greet this students and make introductions. Coordinator/s will give a plan for the day.
SMOD Fashion Show:
Coordinator: ?
Description: Students will give a presentation of the Styles of SMOD to teach new kids about SMOD. (This will also be a learning experience for our current students since this will need to learn in order to teach). Another idea is to have students create a video to show to students.
Needs: Student moderators, students to model, or video
SMOD GAME:
Coordinator: ?
Description: Styled a little after Deal or No Deal, this will be SMOD or No SMOD. Other students will showcase some SMOD fashions and others will showcase common SMOD faux pas. Kids from the audience will need to determine if the outfit is SMOD or NO SMOD.
Needs: Game Show moderator (student or teacher), boxes (or posters) that can serve as "suitcases" that will have SMOD or NO SMOD written on them, students to wear the SMOD or NO SMOD fashion. (need to make sure the looks are not exactly like the ones in the video. We should have some easy ones, ones that are SMOD that may not be considered SMOD at first guess, and ones that are common mistakes).
Grade Level Groups:
9th Grade Meetings: Register for CFNC, meet with select rising 10th/11th graders for "helpful advice to surviving HS," goal setting, setting up a four year plan. 10th Grade Meetings: Register for/Update CFNC, research possible colleges, 3 year plan, possibly meet with former HS students now in college 11th Grade Meetings: Register for/Update for CFNC, research possible colleges, 2 year plan, possibly meet with former HS students now in college, set up timeline and goals for the next year to prepare to apply to college/career/etc. 12th Grade Meetings: Register for/Update for CFNC, research possible colleges, information on applying to college, Q&A, set up goals for this year with timeline for applying to college
Questions about Monday:
Do we want students to create an electronic documents?
Will students have preliminary schedules or at the very least what classes they signed up for?
Can we get former graduates to talk to our students?
Can we get someone from a local college to talk to seniors about what colleges are looking for in an application? (Wake Forest?)
What teachers do we want to run each of these meetings?
Can we come up with a 30 minute rotation that gets the students moving throughout the building? This will help keep their attention and become familiar with the "new building".
Do we have any grade specifc topics from Advisory that would be useful here?
Tuesday Events:
Student Success Workshops:
Current ideas:
Time Management
Organization
Leadership
Note Taking
Study Skills
Math Problem Solving
Any others?
Questions to Consider:
Which teachers will lead? I recommend non-strand teachers so that kids get some time with core teachers.
Do we offer only enough so that all students will rotate through each one, or do we have more so that students may focus on 2 or three?
How long do we give for each workshop?
Don't forget about time for transitions.
If students choose 2 or three, we may want to have them make this choice on Monday so we can make schedules for them on Tuesday.
Will any of these be covered on Monday?
STEM AREAS:
The idea we proposed is for students to rotate through each strand to get an idea of the opportunities in the school. With the schedule we can give it about 1 hour per each area.
Questions to Consider:
What do we want to do? Presentation? Mini Activitiy? Scavenger Hunt type event?
We will need strand teachers hear for this. I recommend planning for them to be here.
Do they choose or do we require them all to go through all of the STEM activities?
Wednesday Events:
This is the day that students can spend with their chosen strand. I suggest doing a morning and an afternoon activity. That way kids can switch after lunch if they want or choose to stay. Here are the plans so far.
Biotechnology
PBL Success Strategies: Students will learn about and practice success strategies for project based learning while investigating the link between health sciences and biotechnology.
Computer Technology
Introduction to the basics of LAN/WAN network systems and cloud computing. This time will be focused on the most efficient and safe ways to save work on network systems and create a methodology for regular backups to a "cloud" based system, like GoogleDocs. This session will address one of the biggest frustrations of students at all levels: "I saved my file but I can't find it."Campers will also be introduced to the Microsoft IT Academy and learn about the various software packages that will allow them to maximize their success in High School and College.
Pre-Engineering
Inventor Boot Camp: Students will test their Inventor knowledge and learn new Inventor skills that they will use in the higher level engineering courses. Engineering Design Challenge: Students will learn about the engineering design process in a fun design challenge.
Thursday Events:
Field Trip to NCState and/or Duke.
Questions to consider:
1. Do we want to separate students? Half go to NCState, half to Duke, then switch at lunch time? Or all go to one place? (May depend on the number we have attending)
Friday Events:
Field trips to local businesses. Orginally we thought about doing smaller field trips to several places. In the afternoon we could invite parents to cook out and then to some field day/problem solving activities. Finally we can have a graduation.
Questions to consider:
1. What places? (Cook Medical, Wake Forest Medial, Nanoscience, etc) 2. Activities for the afternoon?
